Hello
I have been thinking about buying 100 watt suitcase solar for my RV. When I am boondocking I want to be able to use my tv and sat receiver without using my generator. So I don't understand how having solar panels that connect to my 2 6 volt batteries is going to get me AC power for the tv to run. The only way I think this would work is to have the solar charge a battery then hook up an inverter and then plug my rv power cable into the inverter. Can someone explain how I would or should do this.
Thanks Tim

Thanks Tim Hi Tim, Solar panels are simply a source of power just like a generator is a source of power. The difference between the two is what you are using to provide that source of power. The generator uses fuel. The solar uses the sun. They also differ in the amount of power they can provide, and when. With both methods, the batteries are what hold, store, and provide the power needed to run your TV and satellite receiver. If you supply more power to the battery than what you draw, the batteries fill up until they get full. If you draw more power from the battery than you supply with the generator or solar panel, the batteries drain until they empty completely. Whether the 100 watt suitcase will supply enough power to run the TV and satellite receiver and keep the battery charged depends on how much power they draw, the capacity of your batteries, and (obviously) whether the sun is out. Hope that explains things a bit. If not, let me know and I'll try to elaborate further.

Thanks, I understand that what I don't understand this. I have batteries that are fully charged and it won't run my tv or sat receiver be3cause they require AC power. So if I use the solar to keep my batteries charged up and they are charged more that what I use how do I get ac power from the solar to the tv and sat receiver. This is what I need to understand.
Thanks Tim

Thanks Tim Hi Tim, Okay, now I understand what your situation is and what you're asking. You need an inverter to convert your battery power (which is low voltage DC) into what your TV and satellite receiver need (higher voltage AC). That's the missing piece of the puzzle. When using your generator, it produces the higher voltage AC and probably powers a charger for your batteries too. With solar panels, you connect through a charge controller to the batteries and then connect an inverter to the batteries to power your devices.

Yes, that is what I want and where I am confused. So I know how to hook up the solar to my batteries but how do I get that power to my on board inverter in my trailer to convert to the ac I need to run my TV and sat. I am sorry for being a pain but top do this I have to understand it for it to make sense. Do you have like diagram or sematic.
Thanks Tim

And how are you currently recharging your batteries without the solar?

You need to wire the battery to an inverter to go from 12v to 110v. Plug the tv and sat. receiver into the inverter. Try to mount the inverter near enough to the tv/sat to plug them directly into the inverter. Although I suppose one could plug the rv power cord into to the inverter and it work. It's not technically difficult, but depending on the layout of your rv, getting wires from the battery to the inverter to the tv/sat may be a challenge. I believe all of the 110v appliances in your rv run directly from shore power. Not through an inverter.

All
Currently I recharge my batteries with a generator. Well I ordered the 100watt suitcase and received it but no instructions with it. Am a little disappointed with that.

All I do appreciate all the help. I need to look into running power from batteries to RV inverter.
