Hello nice forum people, I am new here and have a question ...
I am looking at this: Renogy 2 Piece 100W Monocrystalline Photovoltaic PV Solar Panel Module, 12V Battery Charging
I have picked out this:
Renogy 1000W 12V Off-Grid Pure-Sine Wave Battery Inverter w/ Cables and SolarEpic 40A MPPT Solar Charge Controller 100V input Tracer A Series 4210A With Display and 2 Sets of Renogy Solar Panel Mounting Z Bracket Set of 4 Units RV Boat Off Grid Roof and Renogy CNCT-MC4Y Branch Connectors Solar MC4 Connectors Y connector in Pair MMF+FFM
If I get these things, can I hook this to regular car batteries in case of emergency? Batteries like in my emergency old car: 1992 Subaru Outback?
This is a huge investment. I need to make sure I purchase the right things. After the above purchase, I don't really have the money to also purchase a battery which is why I'm hoping it will work with regular car batteries. Thank you for ANY help at all!

Hi Ginger,
Car batteries are not going to work well for you. They are simply not designed to do what you're expecting them to do (and especially in an emergency situation!).
Car batteries are designed to supply a large amount of current for a very short amount of time (IE to start the vehicle). They are NOT designed to supply current for a long period of time, especially in the amounts necessary to run that inverter you mentioned. You will end up killing that 1992 Subaru Outback's battery in short order.
I'd recommend waiting until you have the money to do the complete system properly...and that includes the proper batteries (IE Deep cycle). You're right: It is a huge investment. Accordingly, you should make that money count by doing the whole thing right.

THANK YOU! Well, I had picked out a battery here on Amazon:
Fullriver Battery Full Force FFD110-12
It is a deep (something) and says, "for Solar Panel (Photovoltaic), Telcom, CATV and Stand-by Applications" Would this work? Or are there less expensive batteries that would work? This one runs around $300. I can save money and get the right battery! Thank you again!!

And does the rest sound right? It's difficult when I know NOTHING about solar or electric stuff. But I want an emergency setup. And maybe use it to off-set regular energy needs if I can. But I am clueless. I've been reading everything I can find but feel like they are talking in Greek!

The rest sounds just fine. As to the battery, ideally you want to avoid anything that says "dual purpose" or has specs that include CCA (which stands for "Cold Cranking Amps." When you see that, the battery has been designed (in whole or in part) to start vehicles. In solar applications, you're looking for as close to pure "deep cycle" batteries as possible. These batteries are designed to supply smaller amounts of current for longer periods of time. Consequently, they have thicker plates which allow you to drain the batteries to deeper levels without as much damage. So, think of batteries that are used to power electric golf carts and forklifts. Definitely stay away from those designed to start things, like trucks and automobiles. And be wary of those designed to do both (like most marine batteries). So, what to look for? Many people like the Trojan T-105 style batteries. Yes, you need two instead of one (because they're 6V and you need 12V) but their generic equivalents can be found for around $100 a piece. For example, we have a place called BatteriesPlus around my parts. Here's a link to look at: www.batteriesplus.com/replacement/battery/trojan/t105/sligc110

jbs2000, BLESS YOU!! I can't thank you enough! Have a wonderful weekend! I talked to my sister and we might go in together. I hope everyone in the world begins to take advantage of solar. Thank you thank you!! :-)

Hi jsb2000, I am sorry but that link says it is broken. But I get to the website. So I can search for batteries that are 6V that are deep cycle and would work for forklifts. Sound right? Thank you again and please don't respond if it is a problem for you; you've given enough of your time. :-)

Never mind! I see you included the Trojan in the link so you were pointing to it and I can find it! Thank you!
