Hello,
I just installed (2) 100W panels with a 20A MPPT controller to my Trailer. I have one main cutoff switch to the negative line for the trailer. When I installed the panels, I ran them direct to the batteries, overriding the cutoff switch.
The panels are setup to be mounted to the roof of the trailer or mounted on a frame placed on the ground with an extension cord when parked in the shade. I read that the MC4 connectors should not be disconnected under load which got me thinking about adding a cutoff switch to the system. The question is where? Can I simply connect the negative battery cable from the controller to the cutoff switch already installed for the camper or should I install an independent switch just for the solar system? And is the negative wire the right place to put it?
Thanks.

In my system, I have three cutoff switches: One between the panels and the controller, another between the controller and the battery bank, and the last between the battery bank and the load(s).
But to answer your question, I'd recommend an independent switch just for the solar system. The negative wire should be fine, as long as the rest of the system is wired properly.
