If I want to charge my batteries with a regular battery charger, do I need to disconnect the battery from the controller? Hi Jeanine, No, you don't have to disconnect the controller when charging from a regular charger. In fact, you should always leave the controller connected to the batteries so that the controller functions properly. Proof: As I'm typing this, I'm charging my batteries with my Schumacher charger (I'm expecting a "low" solar day with possible heavy storms and my batteries are a bit on the low-ish side). The controller and the charger are both watching the charge state of the batteries and are "sharing" the task. As the sun goes behind the clouds, the charger current increases to compensate. When the sun comes out, the charger backs off. When the batteries reach full charge, both automatically scale back to float charge levels. So, don't worry. The charge controller is designed to handle the battery no matter what else is feeding it. And it won't be damaged by your regular charger either, if that's your concern.
