it came from Amazon with the panels already connected to controller but manual says to connect battery first. Should I always disconnect the panels first? There are no quick disconnects to the panels.

Hey there gadgetzz!
The Viewstar controller, unlike most controllers, has an extremely high tolerance to have the panel connected to it without the battery connected.
Normally, this would damage a controller, but since this controller's protective circuits are built so well you can keep it connected all the time!
