Hi, I was considering buying the Off Grid Premium Kit that was (4) 100w panels and included the 40A MPPT controller. I was confused about the way the solar panels were connected. The diagram showed all 4 panels connected in series. Would that not add up to 48volts? The Kit says 12v, so I thought you needed to parallel the panels... Maybe something magic is going on in the output of the MPPT controller?
Please explain!
thanks, GoSolar!

Hello Sir, The 40A MPPT charge controller will convert the excess voltage to a lower voltage (11-13 volts) to charge your battery bank and will increase the output current. O.C

When wiring the panels in series and with 4 panels you will get 400 watts delivered to the controller, not bad, right. But saying that, I go with parallel, that way if a tree or structure covers a part of one panel with shade the others make it up. But if you go in series, yes you get more watts, up front, but if one panel gets covered by shade, you will be reduced overall, the wattage. There are pros and cons for both ways.

I also bought the premium kit 400 watt and installed it on my sailboat to charge about 450 amps of gel batteries. We did the install on a weekend and I could not contact renogy. We only had enough wires to install this in series and the sailboat is a 12v system. Please reassure me that this was the most efficient method to install this and that your MPPT controller is sending max energy to my battery and that I did not waste money buying all those panels. Also I bought that meter. That is the worst instrument I have on my sailboat. The numbers are so faint that I can barely read them.

John, yes I had that same scenario, I had to get extra wire for the parallel wiring that I did, as they only ship for wiring in series. I suppose it was my fault for not telling them what I had in mind. I also had to buy the connectors for same set up as they were not included. As far as the meter goes, I noticed that in my last install, but I also noticed that if you change your line of sight on it, it gets better. So this time I actually mounted it higher than I would have expected as I get a better view than straight on. Go figure. I figure you have a different problem setting up on a sailboat in that you will have a mast almost always casting a shadow on at least one of your panels. In series that will cut all panels from delivering to your controller. If I were you I would at least wire two pair in parallel so you will always be sending power to the controller. that being said I would think wiring all in parallel would give you an even better chance of getting all you can. Check this out if when you get time: roadslesstraveled.usIf the link doesn't work type this into your search line Roads Less Traveled, you won't be disappointed lots of info.

Hello John, The premium kit is sold as a series set up. If one of the panels is ever shaded then I would recommend rewiring the panels in series/parallel or all in parallel if multiple panels are shaded. Please contact us at (909) 517-3598 if you have any questions.

Hello ALI, I am sorry for the late response. If you wire those 4 panels in parallel you can use 10AWG but if you can use 8AWG i would recommend that. What charge controller are you using?

Here's my problem with my 400 w 12v system. (Rover controller)
I have read through the user's manual for the solar station monitor. I have even printed out so I can read it over and over. Cannot find what I'm doing wrong.
I don't know how long it is supposed to do a scan for available stations?
After letting mine scan for an hour it found nothing. I tried to add stations as the instructions said it would not let me.
I went to my computer and it did not even show the rover or anything other than what is usually hooked up to my computer.
This all being said I have a feeling that my controller is not sending information and not allowing information to be fed to it.
My question is should I see something when I pull up my computer? (it does make the usual sound when I plug the USB cable into the USB port and unplug it, as with any device)
Should I be able to feed information to the controller?
Should I be able to receive information from the controller?
The computer I'm using is the same one I used to tune Harley-Davidson's. It does not connect to the Internet. It is running Windows XP
I will also try to contact somebody during working hours. Steve is my go to guy. I would appreciate any help from anyone. Thank you

yes I do..I followed all of the instructions on the download. It is pulling up the same window no matter if I am connected or not to the controller. I have checked all of the plug-ins and cables they are all working. Do you know if it should be showing a connection when I pull up what's running on my computer?

no idea what you mean by scan, there is a user manual for the software included in the zip file that contains the software. You add/or configure a port then you add a station, ... This is all done in the solar station monitor software.

Renogy,
If the panels are wired in series and one or more are shaded, don't bypass diodes allow that panel(s) to be bypassed? Do bypass sides function only for the whole panel, or per cell, or per strip, or??? I have four eclipse panels.
Thanks
