Hi I have a 400 watt system with 40A mppt charge controller. I want to wire them in 24volts so I can add 2 more panels to the system.
I have 6-91Ah batteries that i can either wire up in 12volts for 546Ah or 24 Volts for 273Ah. Trying to figure out what is the best way to set up this system so I can charge up the whole bank. Also I would like to know can I set up the 6 panels as 24 volt panels to hook up to the 40A mppt charge controller and set up my batteries as a 12 volt bank?

Hello, The 40A MPPT charge controller can only support 500 watts when charging a 12 volt battery bank or 1000 watts while charging a 24 volt battery bank. To wire 600 watts to the charge controller you will need to wire 3 panels in series then the other 3 in series and parallel both sets. You can also wire them in sets of two. You will need to wire your battery bank for 24 volt (273AH).

You are also talking a lot of difference in AH, so what is your needs in amps? Remember it will take many hours to charge such a bank whatever way you go.

Ditto with both of the replies. I had the same issue with my set up and after digging in I came to the conclusion that the SOC indicator on the MT5 is basically not very helpful at all. So, as SpiderBob mentioned I bought a small meter with a shunt and watch what is happening in a much more useful way. As an FYI this is what I bought an use...
DROKĀ® Digital Multimeter DC 6.5-100V 100A Voltage Amperage Power Energy Meter DC Volt Amp Tester Watt Meter LCD Digital Display with Blue Backlight Measuring Volts Current with 100A/75mV Shunt
Simple hook up and I'm happy with it so far. Best of luck to you...

Nice system madmacks. Yes, that will do just fine. I use a Trimetric monitor, fully programmable, it is either standalone or it can be networked into the Trimetric solar controller.
