Good Morning! I had posted this in a different area and decided this would be a better place. I have had several RVs and have had solar systems on most of them. I just purchased a new 21' travel trailer to serve as our traveling motel. We have downsized from a 36' diesel pusher that we traveled in full time for 11 years. I just received my 200 watt/30 amp Adventure off grid system and am already thinking of expansion. I am primarily going to use the solar system to keep the battery charged when the trailer is stored but want to be able to watch TV, use water pump, lights, etc. while at the lake or traveling cross country. In the past I had 300 watt+ systems that allowed the above operation. I have room for one more panel and also one more battery. Should I purchase one more panel or would one more battery do the job under normal circumstances? I guess my question is: Is more charging capacity better or is more storage better? Thank you for your input

I guess my question is: Is more charging capacity better or is more storage better? There is no one answer that works for everyone. It depends on your individual usage and situation. Personally, If I already had sufficient capacity and storage, I'd opt for more charging capacity. The fuller you keep your batteries and the less you have to draw from them, the longer they will last. So, if adding solar panels helps me use my existing battery storage less and helps charge them faster, then that's where my money would go. If, however, my existing battery bank was not enough to meet my needs on non-solar producing days, then my money would go towards supplementing those reserves. It doesn't matter how much sunshine you have if you don't have enough to store it when the sun isn't there.

Thank you for your response and I understand what you are saying, I guess you confirmed what I pretty well thought. I should have ordered the 300 watt system to start with and then the storage could always be increased. Thanks and have a great day.

Hello, I would agree with what JSB said. If you go with more capacity and don't increase the charge you might be draining more from the battery then you would like. -A.L.

I have an answer YES, get the extra panel and battery. But you need to upgrade your charger, and you need to get a battery monitor. I have a 38' super C, with 600w 4 6v batteries, TriMetric battery monitor, and I go to the lake and/or desert a lot. I also run a residental refer as opposed to a 12v and the wife needs her TV in the evenings. Proper management is the real answer. Battery management is essential for a good system to work properly, and you need to know what is happening all the time. There are times when your solar is not going to give what you need, now capacity is important. What I want to say has to come at anohter time, as I've been doing this now for a few years and found there is so much truth in getting more sooner. Yes, I keep batteries charged, and EQUALIZED also very important, and done properly with battery manufacture specfications not other sources.
