Hi, new here and solar challenged!! Trying to figure out if I have to select type of battery or does it do it automatically? Thanks.

The controller will identify the battery as to 12v or 24v

Ok then, what kind of controller do you have? Normally, you choose "type" of battery.
I checked for you and found this:
For Type: The user chooses from Gel, Sealed, Flooded or USER.
