we are new to the solar world, and are living off the grid and piecing together our system. We were gifted 7 - 100watt panels and so that was our starting point. we have 4 - 35ah 12volt batteries (12v system), and a 1000watt pure sine inverter. So with this 12volt system, we have burnt through a few charge controllers, I assume because we went the cheap route and bought a $30 20amp cc.
I was looking at several formulas but want to be sure I get the appropriate sized charge controller. Do I need a 50 or 60amp controller?
Any guidance would be appreciated.
Aloha!

all 7 in Parallel A 100 watt (12v) panel is approx 6A. 6x7 = 42A. 42*1.25 = 52+A so 60A controller.
Series/parallel. 3 strings of 2 panels. Each string of 2 = 6A but voltage is 40v. 3 stings of 6A = 18A. 20+A Mppt controller that can handle 45v input would work.
Series/parallel. 2 strings of 3 each Each string of 3 = 6A but voltage is 60+v. 2 strings of 6A = 12A. 20A Mppt controller that can handle 70v input would work.
One series string of 7 6A string, 155v input (Voc*7, 22v*7=154). Mppt controller that can handle 154v input would work.
700 watts is a lot of charge capability for 4x35ah batteries!

Hello, Our 60 amp commander will be able to take up to 800 watts while charging a 12 volt battery but they would have to be in a series parallel connection and that would be an issue with an odd amount of panels like 7. Please contact our tech team at 800-330-8678 and we can discuss how you would like to wire that. what controller options you have, and what would be most efficient and still fit your application
