I've recently installed a Renogy 200W kit in my travel trailer using the recommended fuses in both panel and battery circuits. The Wanderer installation instructions contain the following "WARNING: Connect battery terminals to the charge controller BEFORE connecting the solar panel(s) to the charge controller. NEVER connect solar panels to charge controller until the battery is connected." There's no warning about subsequently disconnecting the panel(s) before disconnecting the battery, or indication that the controller may be damaged if the battery fuse or a battery connection fails.
Does the warning infer that the relatively high open circuit panel voltage or intermittent connection that could be present during initial controller installation is the hazard? Can the controller safely handle the panel voltage after installation when there's a solid panel connection but no battery load, for example while a battery is replaced? (Probably safe to assume that if both panel and battery fuses are removed, the battery fuse MUST be replaced first to avoid the installation scenario.)

By connecting your battery first, it tells the controller what voltage you are charging. In your case 12v in some other cases it is 24v, the system needs to know first before you attach the charge line from the panels.

I have a leak on my van's roof and is right underneath were my panels are. I need to unmount and disconnect one of the panels (they are parralel wired) do I need to remove any specific fuse before I do so?

No, if you want to really play it safe cover the panel with a blanket. I assume you have two panels? Depending on your controller, you might have to set it for series, if you are starting with two panels.

just disconnect the one panel, remove it and fix the leak.
