I recently purchased a small travel trailer that is "solar-ready" with a solar-on-the-side port with direct line to the battery. To me this is an interim solution and I eventually want to mount panels to the roof and run a proper controller and setup to the battery. However, because the trailer is small, and in situations where the roof may be shaded, I was wondering if I could also continue to use the port in conjunction with the other installation. Has anyone ran into a setup like this?

Yes, you can have multiple charge sources at the same time. For instance, with solar on the roof, your alternator (charge line) and solar can both be charging Plugged into 'shore power', your converter/charger and roof solar and side plug in solar can all be charging.

But you must be mindful of the wire size depending on the way you set it up. The preset wire is probably quite small for a simple battery solar charger. If you add panels and in parallel, you wiring must be sized accordingly.
