Have begun the installation of a 200-watt premium kit on a boat. It has Commander 40A, as we have future plans to expand.
The documentation in several places warns that the charge controller must be connected first to the battery before it is connected to the solar array.
Does that mean once I am up and running I should never disconnect the cables to the battery without first disconnecting wires from the solar panels to the controller?
If that's the case, would it be best to install a switch between the panels and controller which can be flipped off if the batteries are to be removed or serviced, or the fuse in the positive cable between the controller and battery is blown?
Thanks

Forum won't let me sign in for some reason... Computers...
What sort of damage can be done to the controller if the batteries are disconnected from it first, whether by a blown fuse or user mistake?
A solar panel came with my last boat. I never worried about connections, many times disconnecting the batteries without concern for the panel. Maybe I injured that system without knowing.

I have 4 100 watt panels with a 20amp breaker fuse in line. This allows me to disconnect the power from the panels by throwing the breaker switch on the fuse without un-hooking the panels from the controller.

Yes, I'm thinking some sort of switch conveniently located is what I will have to install. The batteries are often disconnected from my system, when I work on the alternator, etc. I've looked through a lot of info on this site but haven't been able to find anything that spells out the sort of damage that can occur. Doesn't mean it's there and I just missed it, of course. Thanks
