Does anybody know what amp breaker I would use between the 48 volt batteries and the inverter?

Thanks, that was great information. I am still trying to understand whether to go to 48 volts or stay with 24 volts. I have 15 100 watt panels in series parallel. 3 banks of 5. I have a 60 amp epolar controller. I am going to purchase a 3000 watt inverter. I found one that will do either 24 or 48 volts. I have 2 100 ah batteries at 24 volts now. I want to go to 4 but I am not sure which is best 24 or 48 volts. Does 48 volt inverter use more idle energy than a 24volt? 48volts worries me a little.

48v would be better... Why do you have so many panels with so few ah batteries??? That seems like a waste of power to me... Also I'm astounded your 60cc can handle all that power...

Does 48 volt inverter use more idle energy than a 24volt? 48volts worries me a little. I have no idea. I might look for one that auto shuts down. Not a fan of inverters for what that is worth! The advantage is the inverter is likely more eff invertering from 48 vs 24, there may be info in the inverter manual, plus idle consumption. another advantage is wire size/distance. 48v would be 1/2 the current of 24v and as we see in charts, voltage drop is based on current so the same size wire, same length would have less voltage drop, less wasted wire heating loss. Mppt controller more eff also bucking from 90v to 48v is more eff than 90v to 24v. The converter eff curves in the manual don't even show 90 to 24!

Thanks again. So your not a fan of inverters. You use a DC refrigerator and other appliances. Aren't those really expensive? You think that is the way to go. I am only at two batteries now. I am going to 4. I don't like dealing with batteries. I use solar during the day only. I use 90 percent of my electricity during those hours.

Nothing wrong with inverters (except poor eff), I just have always had a running engine to hook one to when needed so there was no need for batteries other than the start one cuz the alternator made enough power. Camping I just used 12v items so I did not need a big batt bank and could do without 120v. You are using power as it is made and don't store it. interesting way to use solar, when the sun shines. If you can get the batteries FULLY charged on a regular basis that works, expensive lithium would be better since there is no requirement to FULLY charge. I like the tech issues forum at rv.net www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/listings/forum/39.cfmcouple of full timers have gone to 48v and a couple are using lithium.

He doesn't need one, He only has lights in his yard that he runs with solar... nope, but I see no need having a batt bank big enough to operate a micro wave, coffee pot ect via inverter when the propane stove in the RV works fine, the furnace fan is 12v as are the LED lights. Solar as a maintainer in storage but it can make more than I use at times. Screwing deck boards on a 50' pier or a 40' bridge can be done with a 120v drill motor, an inverter hooked to a kawasaki mule idling all day, its tiny start battery can not do it alone. the bridge deck was 2x6 with 8 screws/board, a total of 640 long screws. In lieu of connecting a running vehicle batt to the RV to charge, one can use an inverter, battery charger and basicly have an inverter generator when needed. Folks with limited batt banks can use jumper cables from a running vehicle as load support for the inverter needs. If I ever have multiple 6v batteries (4 or more) and plenty of solar I'd consider an inverter for 'hotel' loads like TV, cable, micro, ... Same reasoning of not having MPPT$$$$$ when PWM works fine, is programmable, LCD display and monitored via cell phone! With a big bank/big solar a smartsolar Victron fills the need.

Bird not everyone on here that asks questions is trying to run play things in a RV. Like the guy in PR he is trying just to have power enough to have a few things to live... Not everyone is lucky enough to have a luxury RV to play with...
The people that are trying Solar just get by is the people I'm trying to help... I could care less about helping people that use solar just to be cool......
